A hedge is only as good as its first year. Here’s what every planting includes.
Sod and weeds removed along the hedge line.
Every plant set at the spacing you chose, in a straight line.
Each hole dug wider than the root ball and backfilled with your native soil.
Set at the right depth and given a deep first watering.
3 inches along the hedge keeps roots moist and weeds down while it establishes. Priced separately in the calculator.
About 4 ft is typical. 3 ft fills in fastest but is very tight. 5 ft or more suits larger plants like English Laurel, Leyland Cypress and Green Giant. The preview shows how full the hedge will be at each spacing.
5–6 ft plants give you privacy much sooner than 4–5 ft plants. 8–9 ft plants (7–8 ft for English Laurel and Italian Cypress) give you the most privacy on day one.
A double row adds a second row behind the first and uses about twice the plants. Side by side lines the plants up in pairs. Zig-zag staggers the back row into the gaps of the front row, which closes gaps fastest and gives the most privacy.
