What we prune

Every plant has its own cut

Lifting a conifer’s low branches, pruning a fruit tree and renewing an overgrown rhododendron are different jobs. We price and do each one its own way.

Shrubs

Rhododendrons, camellias, laurels, pieris, azaleas, hydrangeas, boxwood.

  • Light shaping: cut back to a leaf whorl or side branch, never sheared into a ball
  • Renewal: remove about a third of the oldest stems, or a hard cut-back for badly overgrown rhodies and laurels
  • Deadheading spent rhododendron flowers

Ornamental trees

Japanese maples, dogwoods, magnolias, crabapples, small flowering cherries.

  • Maintenance prune: remove dead, crossing and rubbing branches, then thin lightly
  • Raise the canopy to clear walkways, patios and windows
  • Broken and storm-damaged branches only

Fruit trees

Apples, pears, plums, cherries, figs.

  • Dormant prune (apples, pears) for structure, light and airflow
  • Summer prune (cherries, plums) in dry weather to limit canker
  • Water-sprout and sucker removal

Hedges

Laurel, arborvitae, boxwood, privet, photinia.

  • Trim sides and top to a clean line
  • Taller hedges trimmed from a tripod ladder, up to 14 ft
  • Hard cut-back for overgrown laurel hedges

Conifers (limb-up)

Douglas fir, cedar, spruce, pine — lower branches only.

  • Remove lower branches to clear a lawn, path or driveway
  • Raise to 8 ft or 12 ft, branches up to 4 in thick
  • We never top or climb conifers

Cleanup & debris

Every job ends neat.

  • Rake, blow and tidy every work area
  • Bundle branches for your yard-waste pickup at no charge
  • Or add haul-away, priced by the cubic yard

How high we work

Ground, pole and ladder. Never climbing.

Our contractors work from the ground, with pole pruners, and from tripod orchard ladders, the safe setup for garden pruning. Every cut is made at 14 ft or lower. They stay 10 ft away from power lines, as the safety rules require of anyone who isn’t a certified line-clearance crew.

FAQ

Common questions

How much do you cut off?

For trees, no more than about a quarter of the live canopy in a season — the professional pruning standard. Shrubs can take more: renewal pruning removes about a third of the oldest stems, and some overgrown rhododendrons and laurels can be cut back hard.

What if my tree is taller than 20 ft?

We can still raise its lower branches or clean up broken limbs we can reach safely from the ground or a ladder, up to 14 ft. Work higher in the tree needs a climbing arborist, and we’ll say so up front.

What happens to the branches?

We bundle them for your yard-waste pickup at no charge, or you can add haul-away and we take everything with us.

Do I need to be home?

For your Pruning Map visit, ideally yes, so you can walk the yard with your contractor. For pruning visits, we just need access to the yard.
